Oatmeal – A Versatile Breakfast Choice

Yesterday, we talked about what kind of oatmeal to buy at the store.  Now that you know to buy plain oats, what will you add to jazz up your bowl?
I posed this question on Facebook yesterday and received some interesting answers ranging from brown sugar to pumpkin butter to bacon.
Here are a few combinations to get your creative juices flowing:
Pecans & Spice
-1 t. apple pie spice
-1 t. maple/agave blend syrup
-1/4 C. pecan pieces
-splash milk
Hearty Nut Butter
-1 T. of your favorite nut butter (above I used natural peanut butter)
-1 t. maple/agave blend syrup
-splash almond milk
Pumpkin Delight
(inspired by Emily W.)
-2 T. pumpkin butter
-1 t. pumpkin spice
Coconutty
(inspired by Nisha R.)
-1 T. craisins
-1 T. shredded coconut
-1 T. sunflower seeds
-1 T. sliced almonds
-1 t. cinnamon
Hot & Cold
-1/4 C. frozen blueberries
-1 t. cinnamon
Cherry Walnut
-1 T. walnuts

This week, Joe picked out some dried cherries for his oatmeal.

My hubby and I eat oats every morning. We put nuts, honey, wheat germ, flax seed, cinnamon, and fruit in ours.

I can't believe I forgot to mention stirring ground flaxseed into oatmeal. Great idea Vicki!

Everyone loves oatmeal at our house, especially when the weather turns cool like it has this week. Some of our favorites include cinnamon + apple chunks, raisins or cranberries + chopped pecans, blueberries + sliced almonds. A great way to start the day!

I've stirred in flax oil, but never the seed. Wonder if that changes the taste?

Ground flax seed doesn't really change the taste (at least in my opinion).
