Monkey Cake for my little monkey

You all know that I love to cook.  But did you know that I hate to bake?  Seriously.  If my husband wants homemade cookies, he usually ends up baking them himself.  I just don’t enjoy it.  Too much precise measuring and flour getting everywhere.  But during birthday month (husband and two kids all have their birthdays in the span of one month), I have to suck it up and bake.

I wanted to make a cute cake for Leila, but one without any food coloring and one that wouldn’t require the skills of a master cake decorator.  I found the idea for this monkey cake here, and thought it looked relatively easy.  I made some substitutions by making my own frostings (chocolate and peanut butter) and using Annie’s Chocolate Bunnies in place of sugary chocolate cereal.  I think it turned out really cute, and everyone enjoyed it.  The peanut butter frosting was my favorite part.  Here are a few photos of the birthday fun.

Showing off her new TOMS.

Playing with Leila’s new bubble machine.

Chasing bubbles.

Enjoying a cool drink while we wait for our food at Joe’s Farm Grill.

Taking a stroll around the Community Garden and farm.

Perfect evening for a stroll.

Do you like to bake??

I showed Jill the photo of the monkey cake, and we both agree it's one of the cutest cakes we've seen in quite a while. Looks like it was a big hit as well! Ɯ

awww, cutest cake ever! my sister and i just had a conversation about how we wish we were still as easily enthralled by bubbles now as we were when we were little! it looks like it was a great party!

    This is adorable!!

I love to bake and love making a homemade cake for Ladybug's birthday. Last year, I used coconut oil, but still used food colorings. This year I want to use natural colorings. She has asked for a chicken on her cake (she'll be 4, I don't claim to understand her!), so I'm researching options already. About 6 weeks until the big day!

You know I love to bake! I'm going to make some whole wheat no oil pumpkin bread today. It still has quite a bit of sugar. I'm not sure what to do about that. Maybe this next fall you can post a bunch of yummy pumpkin recipes just for me! šŸ™‚

The cake is awesome… so cute, and I'm sure it was delicious!
