How to Make Homemade Granola

With the holidays comes extra time in the kitchen cooking with the kiddos.  Whether it’s baking up a batch of Christmas cookies or throwing together a quick dinner, they cold weather makes them more likely to gather in the kitchen and want to lend a hand. This week, we tried out our first batch of homemade granola (gluten-free of course).

the kids cook monday logoWhether you follow a gluten-free diet or not, this is a perfect recipe for simple granola.  Make it once then jazz it up however you want with nuts, fruit or extra spices.  Crunchy and slightly sweet, this granola is perfect to sprinkle on yogurt or add to a homemade trail mix.  And the best part?  You know exactly what goes into each and every batch.
ingredients for homemade granola

-½ cup honey
-½ cup maple syrup
-1 tsp. cinnamon
-1 tsp. vanilla
-¼ cup olive oil
Directions:

Preheat oven to 325 degrees.  Line three baking sheets with parchment paper.  Pour honey into measuring cup and heat in the microwave for 30 seconds to make it easier to work with.  Add maple syrup to honey and stir.
Add cinnamon, vanilla and oil and stir to combine.  Pour oats into large bowl, and mix in liquid mixture.  Make sure everything is well combined and that the oats are coated evenly.Spread oat mixture into a thin layer onto the parchment-lined baking sheets and flatten with spatula.

Bake at 325 for 25 minutes stirring every ten minutes.
Granola will continue to crisp up as it cools.  Make sure not to overcook.
Store in an airtight container.
Our batch filled five jars.  This would make a fun gift too!  Just tie a pretty ribbon around the jar, and maybe attach the recipe.

Here’s what I need to know: Is it as good as Bare Naked granola? I buy those bags constantly and would love to save on the cost by making my own, but…it’s just so good. 😉

The Fruit & Nut kind is my favorite.

It’s been a while since I’ve had Bare Naked granola…this probably isn’t as sweet, but still really good! Our favorite is Love Grown Foods granola. We will still be buying it, but this plain granola is nice to have on hand too.
