May is Celiac Awareness Month (alternate title: What a Difference a Year Makes)

May 1st marks the beginning of Celiac Awareness Month.  As I started to pull together ideas on what to post about this month, I took a quick look back at the timeline of my new journey with celiac disease.  Exactly one year ago this month, I journaled my frustration about the pain I was in and didn’t have any answers for.  I was fatigued, in constant pain, battling headaches, losing hair, losing sleep.  I just wanted someone to tell me what was wrong with me and how to fix it.

In August I was finally diagnosed with celiac disease.  What was at first a sigh of relief, quickly became an overwhelming challenge.  Through the past year, I have learned a ton about celiac and gluten, met some amazing people, and raised awareness within my community of family and friends.

This month I want to share that journey with you, help you understand more about what celiac is and what celiac isn’t.  I’ll post more gluten-free recipes, have guest bloggers share their stories, and give you tips on how to support someone in your life who has celiac disease.  As always, I hope my blog posts speak to everyone, not just the gluten-free community.

If you are on Twitter, I encourage you to join us tomorrow night for the monthly RD Chat.  Rachel Begun will be the guest discussing common myths surrounding celiac disease, and important information to help you play a part in raising awareness.  Simply log in to Twitter at 8 p.m. EST and follow the #rdchat hashtag.

Are you blogging about Celiac Awareness Month?  If so, leave a link in the comments so I can follow along!

I am planning on doing a post a day, a “Day in the Life” style series. Also, having a few guest bloggers – two sharing what’s it’s like living with someone who is gluten-free, and two more who have graciously volunteered to “live as a someone with celiac disease” for a week. Should be an interesting month! Can’t wait to see more of your posts!
