Saturday in the garden

We spent this morning setting up our new plot at the Agritopia Community Garden.  My parents were on the waiting list for over a year, and we are finally in!  We get a 20′ x 20′ plot and plan to plant and harvest all year round.  Today we got the irrigation system set up, planted a lemon tree in the middle, and planted some beans and peas.

Take a look!

This is a cool idea. So, how does it work? Why not have a garden at home? Does community mean anyone that has a plot there is welcome to everybody’s harvest? Thanks!

Great questions! We are doing the community garden because we live in a small rental home and my parents live in an apartment. No room for a garden! Also, everything in your plot is yours to keep. No one is allowed to harvest from each other’s gardens, although many times relationships are formed and trading happens (or even community dinners). There are common tubs for growing herbs that everyone can pluck from. You pay a yearly fee and maintain the garden yourself. Everything is organic. It’s a great way to grow food when you don’t have enough space at home. This is just right down the street from us!
