3 Steps to Perfect Salad Dressing (it’s easier than you think)

Step 1: Grab a mason jar with a lid.  Don’t have one?  Go to your local thrift store, or pick up a pack at the grocery store.

Step 2: Add your ingredients.  The first few times you might want to actually measure them, but after a few tries you will be eyeballing it.

Step 3: Shake it up and use on your favorite salad.  That’s it!  Easy peasy.

Wait, wait, wait!  What ingredients?

This is where it gets fun.  Start with a basic ratio of 3 parts oil to 1 part vinegar.  (Need help choosing the right oil? Click here).  So for instance, 1 cup olive oil and 1/3 cup champagne vinegar.  Then add salt and pepper to your taste.  After that, add anything you want!  Sometimes I add a squeeze of citrus.  I usually add a pinch of dried herbs or a teaspoon of chopped fresh herbs.  I love a good mustard vinaigrette, so I usually add a squirt of spicy mustard.  If I really want a savory tang, I’ll add some nutritional yeast flakes.

I know it’s intimidating to “throw something together” if you’re not comfortable in the kitchen, but I promise the more you do it the more comfortable you will be.  I used to hyperventilate at the thought of cooking without a recipe.  Only time and practice has given me the freedom to loosen up and have more fun.

And just think of all the chemicals, sweeteners, and food dyes you’re avoiding by shaking up your own salad dressing at home!

Did I mention it only takes a few seconds?

Who’s ready to give it a try?

Start with this basic recipe, then have fun with it!

I love making my own dressing. It’s so much better than bottled. Tahini is favorite addition, as well as nutritional yeast. 🙂

[…] Salad dressing can either go really well or terribly wrong. Many store bought versions are loaded with artificial ingredients and chemical foodstuffs. Avoid all the bad and soak up the good by making your own at home. […]

I love creating my own dressing too. I usually go pretty simple – olive oil, white vinegar, lemon juice and salt and pepper. It’s great knowing exactly what has gone into it! I’ll have to give the Mustard Vinaigrette a go! Thanks.

Have you ever made homemade ranch dressing? I’d love a recipe for that as well.
