Adventures with squash blossoms

This morning, we took a trip to the Gilbert Farmers’ Market.  We picked up a colorful array of local produce, and something new that we’ve never tried before. Our haul included chile peppers, sweet potatoes, green tomatoes, heirloom cherry tomatoes, onions, a shallot, garlic, sunflower shoots, peaches, golden beets, squash blossoms, armenian cucumbers, and rainbow carrots.  Before we talk about the squash blossoms, let me hit on my plans for…

Movin’ to the country, gonna eat a lot of peaches

We drive by Agritopia Farm every day. We watch the peach trees go from bare to blooming. And now, the peaches are finally ready. We couldn’t wait to get our hands on some. This morning we sped over there and filled a box with fresh organic peaches. I love living so close to a farm where the kids can learn about what foods grow in different seasons, and where they…

Fresh eggs over swiss chard

eggs and swiss chard recipe

I hope you had a great weekend!  Our Easter celebration started on Saturday afternoon when we headed to church.  After the 4:30 service, there was a massive egg hunt.  They split the age groups into 4 and under and 5 and up.  Leila was ready to go, bag in hand, eyes on the prize…and then they said, “Go!”  She took two steps and froze in the middle of the commotion.…

We finally made it over to the Gilbert Farmer’s Market yesterday morning.  It was a perfect day to check out the local food scene and chat with farmers and artisans. We made a quick loop around to see who was there.  We saw everything from organic produce and fresh eggs to handmade pasta and artisan salts.  There were a few tables of gorgeous breads that I unfortunately had to steer…

Our Trip to Joe’s Farm Grill

Most of you know that we are moving to Phoenix at the end of the month for a new career adventure.  Last month, we drove up to look at some houses and ended up at Joe’s Farm Grill.  If you haven’t heard of it (you  may have seen it on Diners Drive-ins and Dives), they focus on “common food done uncommonly well and served quickly.”       The grill…

First Taste from the Garden

This week we had our first taste from our garden!  Two beautiful yellow pear tomatoes were perfectly ripe and ready to be picked.  I took Joe out to the garden with me.  He was very excited to taste something that we had grown ourselves.   I let him pick the first one. He takes a bite. Success!  He likes it! Wait Mom, there are seeds in here! Are these ok…
