We survived our first year of homeschooling

We finished up our first year of homeschooling this week, and guess what? We all survived. Leila is reading like a champ, Joe is killing it in math, both kids still have their social skills intact (ahem), and I have learned to lighten up. Way up, in fact. My computer was screaming at me this week (Low disk space! Clean out your hard drive!), so I went searching for files…

Keeping journals: 5 ways your kids can start now

This year, we started homeschooling our kids, mostly as a way of sticking together as a family. Because of my husband’s job as a professional baseball coach, we move a few times a year. As we began our homeschool journey, I decided pretty quickly that I didn’t want to have a million pieces of paper to organize or endless works of art that would end up in a shoebox (or…

Sometimes it’s ok to break the rules

“Mom can we start today with painting?” I hesitated. After lecturing him last week on how homeschooling means there is no set schedule. On how he needs to be flexible in his expectations. That “school” is never really over. I almost said no. To the kid who does what is expected. Most of the time without complaining. The kid who will happily do his math, english, and copy work when I…

Stop worrying, Start enjoying

After 6 days of homeschooling, I feel like we’re finding our groove. Joe has declared his love for going to school at home, Leila is determined to put in just as much work as Joe, and I’m having more fun than I thought possible. So why am I anxious? As well as everything is going, my mind starts to wonder if I’m doing the right thing. I had a wonderful…

A few days in…a homeschool and Whole 30 update

We are a few days into homeschooling and the Whole 30. At first I thought we were crazy to start both at once, but I am appreciating the extra energy from the boost of whole foods. We are eating tons of vegetables, good protein, and healthy fats. I don’t think I could have made it this week without this healthy food! For breakfast, I’ve been eating one or two raisin…

Whole 30 and Homeschool

Today we start a new Whole 30 challenge which requires lots of planning, grocery shopping, cooking, and organizing. Oh, and we start homeschool too. We are nothing short of overachievers around here. (Send help.) I’ll be doing the modified low-FODMAP plan, and I guess that means Jeff will be too since I’m the one who does most of the cooking around here. While I don’t know if the Whole 30…

I’m Considering Homeschooling. Related: I’m wondering if I’m crazy.

We recently found out that Jeff got a promotion (Yay!) and that we will be spending our summer in Montana (Double yay!).  He will be the pitching coach for the Missoula Osprey, a short-season rookie team that runs from mid-June to the beginning of September. We are thrilled about this opportunity.  It’s great for Jeff, and who can be upset about spending the hottest months of the year in Montana?…
