Weekly Confessions: Cheapskate Edition

With certain things in life, I’m a total cheapskate.

While I will happily pay good money for organic chicken or a nice pair of jeans, I just can’t seem to let myself buy a new set of towels or bedding that doesn’t look like we live in a frat house.

We got married in 2002 and spent the next 7 years living in various minor league baseball towns.  We had one set of sheets that we took everywhere with us.  Although they’re nice and soft, they are also embarrassingly hole-y.  We have another set that used to be green, but are old enough to have faded into a very ugly non-color.

I did buy what I thought were adorable flannel sheets last winter (At WalMart.  On sale.  Cheapo.) complete with deer and fir trees.  Very log cabin-y.  Jeff was not impressed (“What am I, 8 years old?”).

Also, lately we have been sleeping under Jeff’s comforter from college because it’s the most comfortable thing we own.  Ugly, but comfortable.

Last week I ordered some new sheets off of Zulily because I had credit (Free sheets!  Cheapo!).  They were so stiff and unbearable we tore them off the bed in our sleep.

The sandpaper sheets had Jeff begging me to spend some real money on our bedding.  Ok fine!  So I bought some bamboo sheets and a Nicole Miller comforter set today.  Yes they were on clearance, but they cost more than $10.

And with any luck, they will last for the rest of our lives.

That’s too funny about the sheets! I’m actually more of a cheapskate when it comes to gifts (sometimes!). I just don’t want to buy someone something expensive that they’ll probably put in a garage sale after a year or more verses a cheaper hopefully for thoughtful gift…I’m also a cheapskate with gum. Haha! (:

I think I might be kind of a cheapskate when it comes to eating out. As much as I love food and tasting new flavors, I really can’t stand to spend crazy bunches of money on a multi-course meal. I always feel so let down the next morning and find myself thinking “I spent all that money and what do I have to show for it?” If the dinner company is good, there’s certainly memories to share, but I could have had the same conversations around my own table eating a meal from my crock pot!

I can not bring myself to spend money on clothes. For about ten years now I have been shopping at thrift stores and have found many of them buy the write offs from retailers and then each has there own sale days or specials. At my local goodwill every sunday the color of the week is a dollar. I have gotten so acustomed to getting new (and I mean new unused) high quality clothes for a dollar I cant bring myself to buy anything direct from the retailers. I dread the day when I will need to replace my suites which I spent a considerable amount of money on but have lasted me years, this is a good reason to buy classic styles and avoid trends, unless of course your getting them for a buck 🙂

I love this post! I spend all the money in the world on produce, fun foods, and healthy lifestyle/living, but am very frugal when it comes to anything operating with my car/car maintenance. My rational… I’d rather spend it on something I can eat or do (HA!).
