As I do my best to keep up with the horrific news this week, I am being extra vigilant in keeping the sights and sounds of the news away from tiny eyes and ears. Yes I know my kids will learn about the “real world” at some point, but I’m going to protect their innocence as long as possible. That means keeping the TV off, watching live reports on the computer with the sound turned down (or off), following the stories on Twitter.
One day Joe and Leila will be faced with the reality of this world.
But not today.
TOTALLY, Micah was playing in the play room (separate from TV room) while we were making dinner WITH the news on and he came in and asked what does “justice” mean? He had overheard the news reporter talking about bringing the suspects to justice. I turned it off nervous and wondering what else he had heard…I was able to answer his question this time…but really, I’m not prepared or equipped to answer much harder questions right now.
Innocence is sooooo special at their age, it’s our job to preserve it as long as possible (I slipped this time, but will be more conscious now!)
Thanks for the reminder!
Totally agree. My kids are way too young to be faced with this stuff, especially when we are on the other side of the US from where this is happening. If they were hearing about it at school, then I’d totally be talking to them about it because I’d rather be their source of information and answer their questions. Thankfully, not one thing about it has been mentioned that they’ve heard.
