I joined Laura from Hollywood Housewife yesterday to capture a day in the life of our family on Instagram. I’ve never done anything like this before, and while my Instagram followers may have been sick of my hyped up feed by the end of the day, I anticipate looking back on this collection of photos with a smile on my face many years from now.
Our family doesn’t really have a “typical” day since our life is constantly shifting and changing. We can’t plan too far into the future because of Jeff’s job, and while that may drive others crazy, we have learned to be content in whatever circumstances we find ourselves, as long as we’re together.
So here is a day in the life of our not-so-typical family, complete with my Instagram commentary.
Last year I would have already driven across town to take Joe to school by 7:05. This morning at 8:05, I found the kids giggling in their bunk bed. Have I mentioned that I love homeschooling?
Most of their free time is spent in one of their many “hideouts” where Joe reads Calvin & Hobbs and Leila does whatever Leila does. With bedhead, of course
I love starting our mornings like this.
Reading lessons are the most painful part of the day, so we do them first.
Today for nature study, we are drawing a found object, then using our pocket microscope to draw a close-up view.
While the kids have “recess” I am working on a few recipes for a client. In related news, my kitchen is a mess
Confession: The best filtered light in the house is in the bathroom. Or more specifically, the bathtub.
I made a huge mess, and this guy is helping me wash the dishes. So thankful.
I was going to say this hasn’t been a typical day for us because I only accept one or two freelance jobs per month, but then I realized we don’t really do “typical” around here. And I love that.
As much as I love busy work days, they kick my butt something fierce. I’m taking a breather before dinner while Jeff takes Leila to ballet and Joe watches cartoons.
Finishing the day watching our Royals in the World Series. My parents are here, and we are grilling steaks and eating all the things I cooked and photographed earlier.
He’s cute because you can’t smell him.
We made it through another day. (Not pictured: Leila slamming her fingers in the door, yelling, vacuuming, sighing…)

I saw a few people do this on Instagram! So fun to follow along!
