New Veggie Adventure Challenge

Many of you liked the idea of the Hated Veggie Challenge, but couldn’t think of a vegetable you don’t like.  I realized that I can’t think of one either.  So for you all of you veggie lovers, I would like to throw out a new challenge.  Go to the store and pick up something you have never tried before then bring it home and learn how to cook it.  If you go to the regular grocery store and can’t find anything weird or strange that you have never tasted, try going to a co-op store or asian market.  There has to be something you can challenge your taste buds with.
I went to our local Fry’s (Kroger) grocery store today and picked up a bunch of Rapini or Broccoli Rabe.  I can’t believe I haven’t cooked it before since Rachael Ray seems to use it quite often.  As a young newleywed, I used to tape (yes tape, as in VHS) 30 Minute Meals every day.  After work, I would come home and watch the show, then run out and buy the ingredients to cook whatever meal she had concocted that day.  I have since expanded my culinary inspiration, but will always be grateful to Ms. Ray for getting me started.
And how will I cook my broccoli rabe?  With veggies I like to keep it simple, so I will probably be sauteeing it with olive oil, garlic and some lemon zest.  I will post the recipe in a few days.

This week my family is trying Kale for the first time, also watercress. For Christmas my brother got me a subscription to Everyday with Rachel Ray and it has helped me try a lot of new veggies that I never would have before, so I too am thankful for Ms. Ray.

OK – now you are featured my all time favorite veggie – broccoli rabe! My advice is to definitely boil it for 2 -3 minutes to get rid of bitterness before sauteeing. I love it with olive oil, lots of garlic and few pinches of hot red pepper flakes. Look forward to your recipe…

I'm totally in! I'm going to scour the market this weekend and find something new to try!

Love this approach, as I tend to like veggies, too. I'm determined to find a way to use fennel (that I actually like!). šŸ™‚

Yay! Thanks for participating. Ricki, my favorite fennel recipe is from a Rachael Ray cookbook. I will see if there is a link online somewhere to share with you.

Fun challenge! I have a bunch of veggies I would like to try and others just cook more often…I made kale for the first time two weeks ago… I sauteed it with olive oil and garlic and mixed it with roasted beets and toasted pine nuts…it was really good! (recipe on my blog)

I think it's easy for many of us to boil/steam same old veggies but that's no fun!

That is exactly how I cook broccoli rabe! Sauteed with garlic and olive oil and then tossed in some lemon juice. It's delicious.

This week I'll be trying out radishes and jicama. If you have any recipes, let me know!

Such a great idea … we're always looking for new veggies to try. Here's a super easy way to cook Broccoli Rabe: just throw it in with your pasta, about 4-5 minutes is all it takes.

Wow – so many paralles. I recently picked up broccoli rabe for the first time and loved it. I also had heard about it on Rachel Ray many times but never sure what it was. Also like you, as a newlywed with ZERO cooking knowledge, I had to rely on Rachel Ray to get me through. She taught me how to cook.

My family is picking a new veggie every week for hopefully a year. Next up Kale.

I just saw this post when you retweeted someone’s tweet about it…I recently tried kale for the first time (LOVE IT) and then tried swiss chard a few weeks later. So glad I have discovered these amazing superfoods!
