The doctor called today with the results of my biopsy. I have been officially diagnosed with Celiac Disease.
After sharing the news with my family, I put it out on Twitter. People seemed to be torn between saying “Congratulations!” and saying “I’m sorry.” Let me just say that there is no reason to feel bad. This is a time to celebrate! I have already gone almost a week eating gluten-free and this is the best I have felt in a very long time. I am so thankful to have a diagnosis, especially one that is curable with food. I have a few friends who have been going through the same thing who do not have Celiac Disease and still don’t know what is causing their painful symptoms. So please celebrate with me! If I could, I would have you all over for a Celiac party!
I’m sure I will be posting more about Celiac Disease and my journey towards complete healing. You can expect all of my recipes to be gluten-free from now on, but that does not mean that they aren’t for everyone. I promise that I would never post a recipe if it wasn’t delicious!
You will also be seeing some other big changes going on around here. I am switching over to a new site that I hope will be cleaner and easier to use for all of us. I am also partnering with an amazing organization that I just cannot wait to tell you about.
Change is good. Let’s celebrate!
I'm DEFINITELY going with CONGRATULATIONS!!! Answers are awesome, no matter what they may be. Here's to feeling better! 🙂
I always said that if food can be the cure, there are many, many worse things life could throw at us! I have a lot of inflammation and my Dr. told me staying away from gluten would be best. I am 1year+ gluten free! You will see what a difference it makes. My entire blog, with recipes are gluten free….in case you need a place to start! (sarahkayhoffman.com). This is not a sad day for you – it's the start to you feeling amazing!:)
congrats! as a gluten-free RD and I have gobs and gobs of info and getting started videos on my website

I am so glad that you have a definite answer, and that you're feeling better so quickly. I look forward to reading about your journey into the land of Gluten free foods!
I'm going with congratulations, too! It's wonderful that you finally have a face for all your symptoms, along with a way to keep them at bay.
As for the Celiac party, I'm all for it. I'll bring the beer! (Oatmeal stout, of course…) 😉
SO glad that you are feeling so much better!
Congratulations! Now that you have a diagnosis, you can begin to do what is necessary to help you feel better. Not knowing is the hardest part. Learning what you can and can't eat may take awhile, but it is getting easier with companies now doing a better job of labeling. My daughter was diagnosed 5 1/2 yrs ago and it was hard then to know what she could and couldn't eat, but over time it has become so much easier. Some things are still hard though like when she goes to parties because the kids are having pizza and cake and I have to bring special food for her, but over time she has adjusted. Now she is a Girl Scout and there are no gluten free options. Please support my petition for the Girl Scouts to sell a gluten free and allergen free cookie. http://www.change.org/petitions/encourage-the-girl-scouts-to-sell-an-allergen-free-cookie
It’s great that you have done this, I have lost 35lbs of weight on a gluten and dairy free diet and I have more energy than ever.
Well done
Spencer
I would say “best of luck” is more apt than “congratulations”. I got diagnosed five years ago and it is a journey I wouldn’t wish on anyone. Yes, it’s nice to have a diagnosis and of course it’s wonderful to start feeling better. But if you are half as sensitive as me, you will find yourself feeling bad quite frequently still. Not trying to put the kibosh on you or anything. Just want you to be aware that you have a long road ahead of you. And I honestly do wish you the “best of luck”.

I got the call today – I was somewhat expecting it – but deep down I didn’t really want to hear it… My boyfriend said “Sorry for what you have…” I said “Don’t feel sorry for me…” I feel great and at least now I know that I am NOT crazy and all of these things adding up to this has been annoying, but I know it will be worth it!!
