What do you want to see on the next Supermarket Swap?

Last year, I ran a few posts titled “Supermarket Swap”.  The point was to take an item that you buy at the grocery store and point you toward the healthiest choice.  The feedback was positive and many of you stated that your eyes had been opened when you started reading labels and ingredient lists.

I plan to start running Supermarket Swap posts again at least once a month, but I want to know:

What do YOU want me to compare?

So far, we have talked about
Tortillas
Oatmeal
Bread crumbs
Apple sauce

What should we talk about next?

    Cereal?

  • Shelley April 26, 2011 at 6:19 pm

I agree with Cereal… So many SAYING they are healthy… and are sooooo not….

Also, what about things like condiments? I get so lost looking for say, ketchup or mustard without HFCS

Fruit juice might be interesting… especially for my kids. i'm not a big juice person, but the kids love it… but are any better than others?

Any convenience item… let's face it, we are all busy so if there are good choices for "quick and easy" I'm all ears…

Not sure if any of that is helpful šŸ™‚

I agree with cereal. Also maybe you could do crackers (or do you not eat those at all)?

  • Heather @ Not a DIY Life April 26, 2011 at 10:24 pm

    I vote for crackers and/or potato/veggie chips šŸ™‚

I like the suggestions thus far; I'd add frozen waffles. I spend an inordinate amount of time trying to figure which (if any) are a reasonable choice, nutrition-wise.

Nut butters & nut-free alternatives would be another interesting one (peanut, almond, soy).

I'd love a simple list for us beginners of three things to avoid in foods/ingredients from the grocery store…for example high fructose corn syrup, msg, …
What would be the three you would recommend we stay away from?
Looking forward to this article of yours.

  • CferMN April 27, 2011 at 3:42 pm

Some of the things I'd like to see compared are:

    bread, yogurt, juice

    Thanks!

Ohhh…. Cereal and Juice! Those are the 2 things my kids LOVE and I'd like to know I'm giving them the best that I can…

  • Caitlin April 27, 2011 at 9:32 pm

    Peanut butter/nut butters!

  • ~Lori~ April 27, 2011 at 9:56 pm

How about snacks that most kids love? Granola Bars? Goldfish, etc

Cereal and condiments are good too!

  • Becca @ Our Crazy Boys April 28, 2011 at 1:34 am

I would love to see one about oils. I am confused about which is the best to use for what and reading about them only confuses me more ;-/

  • Colleen April 29, 2011 at 1:29 pm

Granola bars. My kids love them and I'd like to be giving them the best choice.
