I always knew it would be rewarding to sponsor children. I mean, how can it not be? Through Food for the Hungry, we are helping Chereka (Ethiopia) and Reymart (Philippines) go to school, stay with their families, get medical care, the list goes on and on. But what I didn’t realize was just how much our family would benefit in the process.
Through letters, photos and drawings, conversations are started. Questions are asked. Perspectives are shifted. Joe and Leila are becoming more and more aware of this huge world that doesn’t revolve around them. They are learning that we are all connected, and that we have a responsibility to share out of our abundance.
I love watching their minds work as they ask a million questions, many of which I don’t have the answer to. It warms my heart to be out somewhere, doing something completely unrelated, and have Joe bring up Reymart. These children half a world away are on their mind and in their hearts. And when Leila offers to send her brand new dress to Chereka, I am reminded not to hold on so tight to earthly things.
We are all learning, changing, growing. What a beautiful thing.
What a blessing it is to be able to live out loving our neighbors, not only next door, but half way around the world too! These life values will stick with your kids forever.
Love this Alysa!
My reading today from “Don’t Waste Your Life” fits this. “If a man is growing large in wealth, nothing but constant giving can keep him from growing small in soul.” Your babies are growing! Thank you, God
Such a wonderful gift to give to your children – a broader picture of the world!
We sponsor a child through World Vision, but I admit…letter-writing has been hit-or-miss these past few years. Mostly miss.
Yes children deserve better!
I sponsor through plan international and the correspondence has been great.
Love this blog post! Thank you for sharing. It’s so important for our children to learn about living circumstances of other families around the world. If you are interested in helping underprivileged children in Eastern Europe, visit http://www.hart.ca
