Today is World Food Day. A day to not only open our eyes to the issue of chronic hunger, but a day to take a stand against it.
I can’t feed the world.
But I can feed Chereka.
I can’t feed the world.
But I can feed Reymart.
I can’t feed the world.
But I can choose to partner with an organization that creates a sustainable future for those who are hopelessly hungry.
You can’t feed the world.
But you can feed someone.
Today, on World Food Day, take a stand against chronic hunger. Sponsor a child, buy a package of seeds, help buy a goat, or provide a family with farm tools.
Hi Alysa. I would love to help feed a hunger child and family. How can we be sure our money is truly going to these efforts with any organization like this?
That is a GREAT question, Brittany. I’ve done a lot of research on this topic, read a lot of books, talked with a lot of experts…and even went to Ethiopia to see Food for the Hungry at work on the ground. The key is to find an organization that walks WITH communities to help them become SELF SUSTAINABLE. Not throwing food at the hungry, but helping the hungry feed themselves. What I love about Food for the Hungry is that they take a holistic approach, valuing education, health, and community growth. For the most vulnerable (orphans and vulnerable children), they provide everything including food, medicine, housing, etc. For the rest, they make sure they have an education, and they work with community leaders on the ground to identify strengths and weaknesses, forming a plan to get the community to self-sustainability within (usually) 10 years or less (at which point the community graduates and FH steps back). FH has complete transparency in their financials which is of course very important. Also, the FH employees who are on the ground are almost all members of the community they are helping, so they intimately know and understand the situation. This isn’t a bunch of outsiders stepping in and taking over. I know that was a lot of information, let me know if you have any other questions! Thanks.
